Cyrus Kane is a grief-struck detective series. When it opens, DI Cyrus Kane is reeling from the suicide of his wife and trying to get away from everything for the Christmas holidays. In An Ill Wind, he rents an isolated cottage in Cornwall hoping for peace and silence, but this is a Tim Ellis series, so quiet does not last.

That first setup matters because the emotional center of the books is not just the case in front of Kane. It is also the fact that he is carrying deep personal loss, and that loss keeps shaping the choices he makes. By the time of Chains of Illusion, he is back at Brick Lane Police Station in London with his partner DS Jenny Wells, trying to solve a new murder while still chasing the truth about what happened to his wife and unborn child.

So this is both a procedural and a personal hunt.

Cornwall and London give the series two useful moods. Cornwall offers isolation, weather, and a temporary retreat that never becomes safe. London brings Kane back into the machinery of police work, where every fresh case is complicated by the unfinished one he cannot leave alone. That contrast keeps the books moving between inner damage and outward action.

Kane is not the only reason to read the series, though. Jenny Wells gives him a solid counterweight, and the investigations themselves have enough bite to stand on their own. In Chains of Illusion, a murdered surgeon and Kane's own past start to overlap in ways that put both detectives at risk.

If you want crime fiction where the lead's emotional state is central to the story, not just a bit of background color, Cyrus Kane is worth trying. It is a compact series, but it has a strong engine: a detective who cannot separate the next murder from the wound he is already carrying.
