Josiah Dark Books in Order

Josiah Dark feels exactly like the name suggests. These books follow Detective Inspector Josiah Dark of Greater Manchester's Serious Crime Division through cases that look lurid on the surface and then turn out to be tangled with older crimes, buried corruption, or personal trouble. The opening novella, Dark Christmas, sets the tone well: somebody is leaving gory Christmas presents around Greater Manchester, Dark has a partner he does not want, and nothing about the season is remotely festive.

Dark is not a polished hero. He is the sort of investigator who carries irritation around like a coat. That works well for the series because the people around him keep refusing to behave. Partners disappear and return. Journalists know too much. Strange men turn up where they should not. Even when a case looks straightforward, Ellis usually throws in something sideways that makes the whole thing feel a little off-center.

That off-center mood is a big part of the appeal.

The books have a slightly gothic edge, even when the explanation is grounded in ordinary human wickedness. A frozen grave in Dark Heart. A male corpse with a wooden stake through its heart in Dark Shadows. Crimes like these let Ellis play with atmosphere before pulling the investigation back toward police work, witness statements, old files, and the slow uncovering of what really happened.

Greater Manchester matters too. These are urban mysteries, but they are not just busy-city procedurals. The canals, streets, and neighborhoods give the books a damp, shadowed feel that suits Dark's voice and temperament. Past and present keep colliding, and the detectives are rarely allowed the comfort of believing a case begins where the body is found.

If you like moody detective fiction with a touch of the macabre, Josiah Dark is a good series to try. It is brisker than some of Ellis's longer books, but the grim humor and dark atmosphere are very much in his wheelhouse.
