Pandominion Books in Order

The Pandominion books are Mike Carey in full big-idea science-fiction mode. The setup is huge: humanity has spread across a vast number of alternate worlds, linked in a loose political and trading alliance called the Pandominion. That scale gives the series room for empires, technology, class tension, first contact, and civilisational collapse, but Carey never lets it turn into abstraction for long.

People still drive the story.

The books move among several perspectives, including scientists, soldiers, children, artificial intelligences, and people caught between the Pandominion and the machine powers threatening it. That structure lets Carey show the multiverse from different heights at once, the policy level, the battlefield level, and the level of one frightened person trying to understand why their world has suddenly stopped making sense.

What makes the duology distinctive is that it feels expansive without becoming cold. The science-fiction furniture is impressive, alternate Earths, machine empires, deep infrastructure, strange travel, but the through-line is still about responsibility, exploitation, and whether human expansion has built a miracle or just scaled up old mistakes.

If you want Carey at his most ambitious in prose, with a lot of machinery but still a readable emotional core, this is the series to pick up.
