Crossing Midnight Books in Order

Crossing Midnight is one of Mike Carey's most distinctive fantasy comics, a story rooted in contemporary Japan but shaped by folklore, nightmares, and the strange power of small differences. It begins with twins, Toshi and Kai, born on opposite sides of midnight in Nagasaki. That tiny split in time turns out to matter more than anyone realises.

The series grows out of that idea.

As the twins get older, they discover that their lives overlap with a hidden world of spirits, gods, knives, bargains, and old supernatural forces. Carey brings in Japanese myth and horror imagery, but he keeps the emotional focus close to the siblings and their family. The danger is real, but so is the confusion of growing up, carrying expectations, and finding out that fate has already marked you.

What makes Crossing Midnight work is the mix of the intimate and the uncanny. The books can feel dreamlike, even beautiful, and then suddenly brutal. Nagasaki is not just a backdrop either. The setting gives the story texture and a sense of place, while the supernatural layer opens into something much wider and older.
