The Felix Castor books are urban fantasy with a strong crime-fiction spine. Felix, usually called Fix, is a freelance exorcist in a London where the dead have come back in large numbers and everyone is still trying to work out what that means. Some people treat ghosts as a legal problem. Some treat them as a business opportunity. Fix is the poor soul who gets called when a haunting turns ugly.

He is not a swaggering chosen one. That is part of the appeal.

Carey writes Fix as smart, funny, tired, and just reckless enough to keep taking jobs he should walk away from. His tools are unusual too. He works his banishings through music and ritual rather than flashy magic, which gives the series a grounded, practical feel even when demons and possessions start crowding the page. The cases tend to begin small, a ghost in a building, a strange death, a favor for a friend, and then widen into something much darker.

London matters here. This is not a generic fantasy city with taxis. It feels lived in, crowded, grubby, historical, and full of overlapping worlds. The novels lean into the idea that if the supernatural became real, it would not replace bureaucracy, crime, religion, class tension, or personal failure. It would just make all of them messier.

Across the series, there is an ongoing thread involving demons, old loyalties, and the question of why the world changed in the first place. But the books also work case by case, which makes them easy to dip into while still rewarding readers who follow Fix all the way through. If you like paranormal noir, morally complicated heroes, and horror that still leaves room for sarcasm, this is one of Mike Carey's most satisfying worlds.
