Rampart Trilogy Books in Order

The Rampart Trilogy is Mike Carey's far-future survival story, told in the voice of a young man named Koli from the tiny village of Mythen Rood. The world has been broken for generations. Old technology survives in fragments, but it feels half magical because so few people understand it. Outside the walls, the landscape is beautiful and deadly, full of engineered plants and trees that can kill as easily as any predator.

Koli starts small. That is what makes the books work.

At first, his concerns are local: belonging, status, family expectations, and the rules that keep his village alive. Then one act of curiosity pushes him out into the wider world, where he teams up with the wandering healer Ursala, the sharp and brave Cup, and Monono, an unexpectedly funny artificial intelligence trapped inside a piece of old tech. From there the trilogy becomes part road story, part coming-of-age tale, and part mystery about what humanity did to get here.

What holds the series together is not just the worldbuilding, though that is excellent. It is the voice. Koli narrates in a version of English shaped by centuries of loss and change, and Carey makes that voice feel warm, clear, and intensely personal. The books never lose sight of the everyday stakes, hunger, trust, grief, small moments of hope, even when the plot opens out toward the fate of whole communities.

If you like post-apocalyptic fiction that feels intimate as well as epic, this trilogy is one of Carey's best places to start.
