Oliver Dean Spencer Books in Order

Oliver Dean Spencer is a Montreal-born crime-fiction writer and artist whose books draw on the sharp edges of hard-boiled detective stories. His work follows private investigators who have to sort truth from performance, usually while murder, secrets, and larger conspiracies close in.

Montreal is central to Spencer's life and work. He has also spent time in Rome, Italy, and his later fiction brings Montreal into the foreground as a place of offices, streets, institutions, and people with reasons to keep their dealings quiet.

Before publishing crime fiction, Spencer studied visual arts in Montreal and Ottawa. He earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Concordia University in 2008, then completed a Master of Fine Arts in Visual Arts at the University of Ottawa in 2010. That background sits alongside his career as a writer and painter, two pursuits that both ask for patience, observation, and attention to small details.

His first published James Cartwright book, The Spencer Files, arrived in 2018. It introduced a former Detroit cop working as a private investigator on the city's backstreets. Cartwright is tough, skeptical, and prone to dry observations, but he also has a moral code that keeps making his cases more personal than he'd like.

The book collects five Cartwright cases, including Tell Me That You Love Me, The Polka Dot Affair, The Spanish Curse, The Final Ring, and The Conversation. They are compact noir stories with desperate clients, crooked schemes, missing people, and clues that rarely arrive in a neat package. Readers who enjoy a fedora-and-raincoat version of detective fiction will recognize the territory, but Spencer gives the stories modern corporate and political worries.

Cartwright's longer investigations continue in Call of the Nightingale and The Case of the Runaway Orangutan. In the former, he tries to clear Alice Carmichael, a teenager accused of killing her grandfather, a scientist with a troubling past. In the latter, a seemingly odd request to find a missing orangutan leads toward a green diamond, international violence, and a threat much bigger than a routine insurance job.

Spencer later introduced another investigator in The Crossing, the first Devon West Mystery. West is a Montreal professor of Shakespearean literature who also works as a private investigator. The shift gives Spencer room to explore a different city, a different kind of detective, and a mystery involving a missing executive, a charitable organization, and secrets hidden behind respectable public language.

In 2023, Call of the Nightingale received the MAXY International Book Award for Best Mystery and Crime Fiction Novel. Spencer's books keep returning to questions of loyalty, corruption, guilt, and the uneasy line between doing a job and doing the right thing.

When he isn't writing, Spencer paints, plays chess at a local cafe, and spends time with his daughter. It fits his fiction. His detectives are always listening closely, looking twice, and wondering what people leave unsaid.
