Author bio

Minerva Spencer was born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, and grew up loving stories about the past. Before she ever thought about writing her own novels, she built a life that wandered through several countries and more than a few careers.

She has lived in Canada, the United States, Europe, Africa, and Mexico, experiences that left her with a fondness for new places, unfamiliar food, and complicated histories. Along the way she studied history, worked as a criminal prosecutor, and taught American history at the college level. For several years she and her husband also ran a busy bed and breakfast, which gave her a front row seat to human quirks and small dramas.

Eventually the hectic hospitality life lost its shine, and she turned back to the thing that had always anchored her, reading. That daily habit slowly shifted into writing, first in snatched minutes, then in longer stretches until the stories on her laptop began to outnumber the ones on her nightstand.

She did not come to publishing early. By the time her debut Regency romance Dangerous appeared, she had already changed careers more than once and moved thousands of miles from where she started. That later start shapes the urgency in her schedule now. She treats writing like a craft she is still catching up on, drafting every day at a desk that looks out over the Sangre de Cristo mountains in northern New Mexico.

Her historical romances range from swashbuckling Regency adventures in The Outcasts to sharp, socially aware ton stories in Rebels of the Ton. Under the name S.M. LaViolette she leans into very high heat and emotional intensity in series like The Academy of Love, The Bellamy Sisters, The Masqueraders, The Seducers, Victorian Decadence, and The Hale Family: Americans in London. As S.M. Goodwin she writes the Lightner and Law historical mysteries, following an unlikely pair of detectives through pre–Civil War New York.

Across all those pen names, certain threads repeat. Her leads are rarely conventional dukes and debutantes. They are widows running brothels, scarred soldiers, circus fighters, investigative journalists, and artists trying to keep the lights on. Class friction, found family, and second chances appear again and again, along with frank conversations about desire.

Readers often mention how grounded her worlds feel. That is where the earlier chapters of her life show up. The legal work, the teaching, the years in small businesses, even the stint as a reader for the blind all seep into the details of how her characters work, argue, and fall in love.

These days she writes full time in the mountains of New Mexico, where she shares a home with her husband and a shifting cast of rescue animals that includes dogs, poultry, and the occasional wayward creature that wanders in. When she is not at the keyboard she is usually making something with her hands, whether that is knitting, sewing, or another craft project waiting for its turn.

She likes happy endings on the page, but she rarely makes them easy. Her couples earn their peace through hard conversations, bad choices, and the slow work of trust. That mix of emotional grit, sensuality, and a slightly offbeat sense of humor has turned her various pen names into a shared universe that readers can dip into almost anywhere and still feel at home.
