Author bio
Lauren Oliver was born in New York City and raised in Westchester County, New York, in a house where books were everywhere. Both of her parents taught literature, so reading was part of the rhythm of daily life. She has described a childhood full of stories, art, costumes, and imagination, which makes a lot of sense once you look at the worlds she later built on the page.
Stories came early.
As a kid, she didn't just read books she loved, she kept going with them, writing unofficial sequels and inventing extra scenes. That habit eventually turned into a more serious path. She studied literature and philosophy at the University of Chicago, then moved back to New York for an MFA in creative writing at NYU. Before publishing her own fiction, she worked in children's publishing at Razorbill, which gave her a close look at how books are shaped before they ever reach readers.
Her first novel, Before I Fall, arrived in 2010 and made an immediate impression. It follows Samantha Kingston, a popular teenager forced to relive the last day of her life over and over, and it showed one of Oliver's strengths right away: she likes a big premise, but she roots it in messy feelings, moral pressure, and characters who have to face themselves.
She followed that with the Delirium trilogy, Delirium, Pandemonium, and Requiem, a dystopian series built around the idea that love has been classified as a disease. The setup is bold, but the books work because Oliver keeps the emotional stakes close. Readers who click with her writing often like that combination of fast plot and raw interior conflict. The trilogy also found a wide audience and was translated into dozens of languages.
She doesn't stay in one lane.
Panic turns a dead-end summer in a small town into a dangerous competition. Replica plays with form, letting readers move through two linked stories about identity, secrecy, and human experimentation. Vanishing Girls and Broken Things lean harder into suspense, fractured friendships, and the way a single event can distort a whole community. Even when the genre shifts, Oliver returns to some of the same pressure points: fear, love, memory, guilt, and the stories people tell about one another.
She has also written for younger readers, including Liesl & Po, The Spindlers, and the Curiosity House books with H. C. Chester. Those novels are aimed at a different audience, but they still feel connected to the rest of her work. There are misfit characters, eerie settings, hidden worlds, and young people who have to become braver than they expected.
Her books have also moved into film and television. Before I Fall was adapted as a feature film, and Panic became a television series, with Oliver writing every episode and serving as executive producer. Alongside her fiction, she has worked as a screenwriter and built story-focused media companies, which helps explain why her bibliography feels so comfortable moving between page-turning YA, middle grade adventure, and adult suspense.
Now she divides her time between Maryland and Los Angeles. She remains one of those writers whose work is easy to browse by mood: if you want dystopian romance, a thriller, a ghost story, or a strange and clever middle grade adventure, there is probably a Lauren Oliver book that fits.
