Series background & context

NOLA Heart is Maria Luis's contemporary New Orleans romance series. Each book follows a different couple, but the stories share a close network of friends, coworkers, relatives, and familiar city spaces. The mood is warm, funny, and steamy, with serious emotional baggage underneath the sharp banter.

New Orleans is more than a backdrop here. Its neighborhoods, local traditions, police work, nightlife, family gatherings, and stubborn sense of community all shape the stories. Characters may try to leave their past behind, but this is a city where old connections have a way of finding them again.

Everybody knows somebody.

Say You'll Be Mine starts the series with Shaelyn Lawrence returning to New Orleans to help her grandmother. She hopes her stay will be temporary, especially because Brady Taylor, the first love she left behind, is still there. Brady is now a detective focused on a promotion, but Shaelyn's return forces both of them to reconsider the hurt that separated them years earlier.

The next books widen the circle around the New Orleans Police Department. In Take A Chance On Me, homicide detective Nathan Danvers meets Jade Harper, a crime lab technician beginning a new life after leaving Miami and an unhappy relationship. Dare You To Love Me follows wounded veteran Luke O'Connor and Anna Bryce, a single mother and lingerie-boutique owner who wants a future but is drawn to the one man insisting he is not available for one.

Tempt Me With Forever shifts to beauty influencer Lizzie Danvers and Gage Harvey, a tattoo artist who also works for New Orleans' Special Operations Division. Lizzie is tired of bad-boy heartbreak, while Gage has little interest in romance, which gives their story a playful challenge from the start.

The city keeps the connections alive.

The couples have different jobs and different problems, but the series returns to a few favorite concerns: second chances, family expectations, old trauma, and the difficulty of trusting that love can be safe. Luis balances those heavier threads with friends who meddle, jokes that land at awkward moments, and romances that let the characters keep their personalities.

The books can be read as standalones, though publication order is a good choice for readers who enjoy seeing previous couples appear later and watching the social circle grow. Start with Say You'll Be Mine for the full New Orleans welcome, then continue through the series in order.
