Series background & context

Blood Duet is Maria Luis's darker New Orleans romance, built as one continuing story across Sworn and Defied. Unlike her interconnected contemporary series, these books should be read in order. The first establishes Avery Washington and Lincoln Asher's dangerous situation, and the second carries their conflict forward.

Avery has spent years surviving on the edges of New Orleans after witnessing her mother's murder. She has learned not to trust easily, and revenge has become the force organizing her life. That history makes her wary, sharp, and determined to stay in control, even when the past begins pressing in again.

Then she meets Lincoln Asher.

Lincoln is not presented as a safe answer to Avery's problems. He is scarred, secretive, and tied to the violent world Avery has tried to navigate alone. Their connection is immediate, but trust comes much harder. The tension in Sworn comes from watching two people with plenty of reasons to keep their distance move toward each other anyway.

New Orleans matters here in a different way than it does in the lighter NOLA Heart books. This is the city at night, full of hidden arrangements, dangerous men, old grudges, and places where a person can disappear if they need to. Avery knows its rougher corners, while Lincoln moves through a world ruled by power and loyalty. The setting gives their relationship an ongoing feeling of risk.

The books are dark romance, and they do not soften the moral mess around either lead. Avery wants justice for what happened to her family. Lincoln has his own need for vengeance, as well as a habit of making choices that complicate everything. Their attraction can feel like shelter one moment and another threat the next.

Nothing stays simple.

Defied continues Lincoln and Avery's story rather than switching to a new couple. Revenge, hidden loyalties, and the question of whether either of them can escape the roles imposed on them all become more urgent. Avery remains central to the story's direction. She is not waiting to be rescued, and her refusal to bend is a major part of the series' pull.

Readers should expect a tense, steamy romance with morally gray characters, intense emotions, and an ongoing plot that needs both books to land properly. Start with Sworn, then move directly to Defied for the full story.
