Blood Duet is Maria Luis's darker New Orleans romance, built as one continuing story across Sworn and Defied. Unlike her interconnected contemporary series, these books should be read in order. Defied continues Lincoln and Avery's story rather than switching to a new couple. Revenge, hidden loyalties, and the question of whether either of them can escape the roles imposed on them all become more urgent. Avery remains central to the story's direction. She is not waiting to be rescued, and her refusal to bend is a major part of the series' pull.
