Series background & context

The Nina Wilde and Eddie Chase novels are Andy McDermott’s big, pulpy adventure playground. They read like modern-day treasure hunts, where ancient myths collide with private armies, secret cults, and very contemporary politics.

At the heart of the series are two people who never quite planned on saving the world. Nina Wilde is an American archaeologist obsessed with the idea that legends such as Atlantis might be built on real history. Eddie Chase is a blunt, sardonic former SAS soldier hired to keep her alive. In The Hunt for Atlantis she finally gets the chance to test her theory, backed by a billionaire and his daughter, only to discover that a secretive brotherhood will kill to keep Atlantis hidden. Their first globe-spanning chase—for a city lost under the ocean—sets the template: big stakes, bigger set pieces, and constant friction between Nina’s curiosity and Eddie’s survival instincts.

Each book takes that foundation and links it to a different piece of myth or religious lore. The early adventures race after the tomb of Hercules, the sword Excalibur, and a discovery that could rewrite human origins. Later, Nina and Eddie are pulled toward a hidden pyramid of Osiris under the sands of Egypt, a Himalayan vault connected to the god Shiva, and the golden city of El Dorado. They tangle with Viking runestones that might point to Valhalla, a legendary spring of eternal life buried with Alexander the Great, prophetic relics tied to the Book of Revelation, and the legacy of King Midas.

As the series goes on, the dangers escalate. Nina moves from being an embattled academic to running an international heritage agency, juggling politics as well as booby-trapped ruins. Eddie’s past as a soldier and mercenary refuses to stay buried, dragging in old comrades, unfinished wars, and family secrets. They confront resurgent Nazi networks, doomsday cults, rogue billionaires, and shadowy government programs that all want to weaponise history’s most powerful secrets.

The action is unashamedly loud. McDermott stages thefts of iconic artworks, helicopter raids on remote temples, underwater dives into Atlantean ruins, and running battles through city streets and mountain passes. Michelangelo’s David is stolen in broad daylight, a hidden chamber beneath the Great Sphinx becomes a battleground, and even the Antarctic ice conceals a civilisation whose technology could wipe out humanity. Through it all, Nina and Eddie trade barbs, improvise, and somehow keep one step ahead of people with far more resources.

What keeps the series grounded is the relationship at its core. Nina and Eddie go from strangers to reluctant partners, then fiancés, then spouses trying to build a family while the world keeps trying to fall apart. Short pieces like The Last Survivor show them dealing with grief and impending parenthood between battles. Their arguments, compromises, and moments of quiet are as much a part of the story as the explosions.

Over time the books stretch across nearly every kind of adventure you can imagine, from early quests like The Tomb of Hercules and The Secret of Excalibur to later epics such as The Midas Legacy, King Solomon’s Curse, The Spear of Atlantis, The Resurrection Key, The Temple of Skulls, The Knights of Atlantis, and The Shroud of Hades. Each one stands on its own, but recurring allies, enemies, and plot threads reward reading in order.

If you enjoy thrillers that feel like a blend of archaeology, conspiracy, and blockbuster cinema, the Nina Wilde and Eddie Chase series is built for you. Expect nonstop motion, wild locations, and a duo who are always slightly out of their depth, arguing all the way, and somehow saving the day anyway.
