Author bio

Nik Morton came to novels after a long apprenticeship, but he had been building the muscles for it for years. He grew up in Whitley Bay, North Tyneside, read widely, drew cartoons, and wrote early. At sixteen he finished a novel, and on 18 October 1965 he left home to join the Royal Navy, a move that would give him both material and discipline.

The writing bug arrived early.

Morton served in the Navy for more than twenty years, later worked in IT, and spent decades editing periodicals, reviewing books and films, and writing articles. He has also chaired writers' circles and run workshops. Long before the novels, he was already doing the steady, unshowy work that makes a writer last.

He sold his first short story in 1971, and over the years published well over a hundred more, along with essays, reviews, cartoons, and illustrations. One small Navy moment even helped spark a later series. During a shipboard ouija session, he blurted out that the gibberish message might be code. That stray thought eventually grew into Tana Standish, the psychic spy at the centre of Mission: Prague, Mission: Tehran, Mission: Khyber, and later Mission: Falklands.

His first novel acceptance came much later, in 2007, with Pain Wears No Mask. That book introduced Sister Rose, a former Newcastle policewoman turned nun, and it points to something Morton returns to often: people under pressure, trying to do the decent thing in systems that are bent, brutal, or simply failing. Readers who like his work often mention the same mix of momentum and range. He can move from a London hostel to Cold War Prague, from Tenerife to the Old West, without losing sight of the human problem at the centre.

That range is real.

Under his own name he has written crime, thrillers, horror, science fiction, fantasy, and historical adventures. Spanish Eye and Leon Cazador, P.I. follow a half-English, half-Spanish private investigator through cases that can be funny one moment and bleak the next. Catalyst gives him a different engine entirely, a vengeance-driven action thriller with Catherine Vibrissae, a chemist, climber, and model who refuses to stay in her lane. With Gordon Faulkner, writing as Morton Faulkner, he also built the sprawling fantasy world of Floreskand: Wings, King, Madurava, and Prophecy.

Westerns matter here too. Writing as Ross Morton, he published a run of western novels including Death at Bethesda Falls, Last Chance Saloon, Blind Justice at Wedlock, Old Guns, The $300 Man, and The Magnificent Mendozas. He also wrote the Cash Laramie adventures Bullets for a Ballot, Coffin for Cash, and Death For A Dove. Across all of them, the recurring interests are easy to spot: justice, betrayal, survival, old loyalties, and the way place shapes character.

He has also worked on the publishing side, serving as Editor in Chief of a US publisher from 2011 to 2013. That editorial eye shows in the breadth of his career, from themed short story collections to a practical guide, Write a Western in 30 Days.

After years living in Spain, Morton has more recently been based in north-east England with his wife Jennifer, who is a linguist and musician, and with family nearby. It suits him. He is the kind of writer whose career makes more sense the longer you look at it: not a sudden burst, but decades of steady work, curiosity, and refusal to quit.
