Chronicles of Floreskand Books in Order

The Chronicles of Floreskand is Nik Morton's big secondary-world fantasy sequence, written with Gordon Faulkner under the joint name Morton Faulkner. It is epic in scale, but its entry point is pleasantly direct: strange things are happening, the world feels old and full of secrets, and a handful of people are forced onto the road before they fully understand what they are caught up in.

It begins with Wings of the Overlord, later issued as Wings. In that opening story, the skies over Lornwater darken with the flight of the red tellars, the great birds of the Overlord, all moving toward Arisa. Ulran, an innman rather than a born hero, feels compelled to find out why. He is joined by the ascetic Cobrora Fhord, who keeps plenty to himself, and the warrior Courdour Alomar, who has reasons of his own for travelling. That gives the series one of its strengths straight away: it is built on uneasy alliances, clashing temperaments, and companions who do not arrive fully explained.

Floreskand itself does a lot of the work. This is not a blank fantasy map with a few renamed taverns. The cities, sects, mountain ranges, swamps, tunnels, lakes, and hidden peoples all shape the story. The world feels layered, with old rites, buried rivalries, and beliefs that still have teeth. Magic is present, but it is not casual. It tends to arrive attached to ritual, prophecy, danger, or political consequence.

By King, the focus widens. While Ulran and Cobrora are away, Lornwater tips toward open rebellion against Saurosen, holder of the Black Sword. Ranell is drawn into conspiracy, civil war breaks out, and the struggle spills beyond streets and palaces into forests, tunnels, and battlefields. The series becomes as much about power and legitimacy as it is about questing. That shift matters, because Floreskand is not only a travel adventure. It is also interested in what happens after tyranny has had time to settle in.

Madurava and Prophecy broaden the canvas again. Rebuilding, diplomacy, sectarian pressure, personal vengeance, old loyalties, abductions, migration, and ominous signs of a coming prophet all begin to overlap. Characters who survive one crisis rarely get to rest before another arrives from a different corner of the map. The result is a fantasy saga that keeps moving while steadily opening up its politics and mythology.

The tone sits somewhere between quest fantasy, military struggle, and courtly intrigue. There are monsters, ambushes, secret missions, and bloody set pieces, but also arguments over rule, belief, succession, and survival. Readers who like fully imagined worlds, busy plots, and the feeling that the fate of a continent is being worked out by flawed people under pressure will find plenty to settle into here.

Floreskand is large, old, dangerous, and very much alive.
