Along the way they fight jealous exes, ancient power players, ghosts, demons, and a zealot ghoul leader who would happily start a war between species.

One of the pleasures of Night Huntress is watching the cast widen. Friends, enemies, and uneasy allies include Cat’s stubborn mother, ex military teammates, a prickly ghoul queen, the pyrokinetic Vlad Tepesh, and roguish Ian. Many of these side characters later headline their own books in spin off series, but their roots and emotional ties are laid here. The world also keeps changing as laws shift, secret agencies rise and fall, and the line between monster and protector blurs.

Tone wise, the books balance sharp action, overtly steamy romance, and a lot of gallows humour. Cat’s narration is blunt and often self deprecating, which keeps some of the darker material from feeling bleak. At the same time, the series does not shy away from the cost of violence, estrangement from family, or the guilt that comes from bad choices made for good reasons.

Readers coming to Night Huntress for the first time can expect a clear through line from Halfway to the Grave to Up from the Grave, with novellas slotted between larger arcs.
