Author bio
Nicole Falls is a Chicago native who has been in love with books for as long as she can remember. She has said she started reading at three, and by first grade she was already deep into chapter books, library trips, and the thrill of getting lost in a story. She has also written about living just a short walk from her local library as a kid, which makes a lot of sense once you see how naturally books seem to sit at the center of her life.
Books got to her early.
As a young reader, she tore through the kind of series plenty of 80s and 90s kids grew up on, including books by Ann M. Martin and Francine Pascal. Later, Black romance opened up a different kind of reading life for her. She has talked about discovering authors like Brenda Jackson and about working at bookstores when she was young, which widened her sense of what fiction by and about Black people could do.
She started writing early, too. At sixteen she wrote an unpublished novel called Underscore, a project she now talks about with a lot of humor and honesty. For a while, the dream of being a published author drifted into the background, but the writing itself never really stopped. She kept doing it, even when life was pulling her in other directions.
Before writing full-time, Falls worked in higher education. Then, in early 2016, a story idea hit and kept growing. What began as something small turned into a novella, and on July 25, 2016, she published Adore You, her first book.
She has not really slowed down since.
Falls writes contemporary Black romance, and one of the pleasures of reading across her catalog is seeing how many different shapes that can take. Smitten leans into vulnerability after heartbreak. Shots Not Taken blends pro basketball, music, and ambition. The Changeup turns sports rivalry into flirtation. Excess Baggage plays with age-gap attraction and the emotional history people carry into new love. Across the books, readers tend to come back for the banter, the heat, and the sense that these characters have full lives beyond the romance.
She is especially good at writing community. Sisters, cousins, best friends, exes, coworkers, kids, and meddling relatives all matter in her stories. Even when the books are short, they rarely feel empty. The people around the couple help give the love story weight, and Falls has said more than once that she likes writing regular people, flawed, funny, stubborn people, finding their way to love.
Her literary influences include Toni Morrison and Zora Neale Hurston, and that lifelong reading life still shows in how seriously she takes story. At the same time, she brings a casual, conversational energy to her work and to the larger romance space. She has hosted the Falls on Love podcast, led community conversations about Black romance, and spoken openly about the genre she cares so much about.
These days, she lives in the suburbs of Chicago and writes full-time. That seems to fit. Nicole Falls writes like someone who knows exactly what kind of stories she wants to tell, and who she wants them to reach.
