Series background & context

New Orleans Nocturnes is where Carrie Pulkinen lets her rom-com side run wild. These books are paranormal romances, but they are also fast, funny, and happily aware of how ridiculous supernatural dating can get. Vampires, witches, demons, reapers, bat shifters, and even angels all end up tripping over romance in the same shared New Orleans nightlife scene.

The series starts with a great hook in License to Bite. A woman gets turned into a vampire during Mardi Gras and then discovers she faints at the sight of blood. That tells you a lot about the tone right away. This world has real stakes, but it also likes bad luck, awkward timing, and heroines who are trying very hard to keep it together while everything gets weirder by the minute.

From there, the cast and creature list keep expanding. Swipe Right to Bite brings in demons and a supernatural dating app. Shift Happens and Life's a Witch lean into witches, wolves, and hellish bargains. Finders Reapers gives the Grim Reaper a break that goes predictably badly. Batshift Crazy adds a bat-shifting vampire and murder trouble, while Holy Shift turns Easter itself into a romantic emergency.

Nobody in this series gets a normal week.

Even with all that chaos, the books do not feel random. The shared setting matters. The French Quarter, Mardi Gras energy, occult corners of the city, haunted history, and supernatural nightlife all help tie the stories together. Characters from earlier books pop back in, friendships carry forward, and the city keeps acting like the biggest side character in the room.

The romance structure is welcoming, especially if you like standalones inside a bigger world. Each book centers on a different couple and a different supernatural problem, so you can pick one based on your favorite creature and probably have a good time. Reading in order is still rewarding because the cameos, running jokes, and shared world details land better that way.

If you want paranormal romance that stays light on its feet, this is the series to try. The books are sexy, playful, and often very silly in the best way, but they still deliver real emotion once the jokes settle down. Think less doom-and-gloom urban fantasy, more supernatural chaos with flirtation, found family, and a strong chance that someone is about to make a terrible magical decision.
