Author bio
Nathan Hystad is a science fiction and horror writer from outside Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. He still lives in Alberta with his wife, his dog, and, by his own description, piles of books.
That last detail feels right.
A lot of his work reads like it was written by someone who grew up loving stories about strange signals, ruined worlds, hidden doors, and the one ordinary person who keeps moving because stopping is not an option. He has said he wanted to write from the time he was a kid, and that early interest never really left. Life got in the way for a while, as it does for most people, but he eventually came back to it in a serious way and started building his craft through short fiction.
That quieter apprenticeship mattered.
Before the novels took off, Hystad published shorter work in magazines, online venues, and anthologies. He also became closely involved with independent publishing, running Woodbridge Press and helping shape the Explorations anthologies. That background helps explain part of his appeal. Even in his bigger series, there is often a tight, practical feel to the storytelling. He likes momentum, but he also likes structure.
His breakout novel was The Event, a fast-moving alien invasion story built around Dean Parker, a widower trying to survive a catastrophe his wife somehow saw coming. From there, Hystad expanded that premise into the long-running Survivors sequence, one of the big anchors of his bibliography. Readers who stick with those books tend to come back for the same reasons: a strong family thread, regular discoveries that widen the world, and a willingness to keep pushing the story into new corners of space.
He does not stay in one lane, though. Lost Contact leans into mystery, ancient clues, and first-contact suspense. The Other Place starts with impossible glass-like barriers appearing around the world and grows into a wider apocalyptic puzzle. Red Creek goes the other direction, into small-town horror, buried memory, and the kind of dread that feels personal before it ever turns cosmic. More recently, books like Ethos show how comfortable he is with larger ensemble casts, colony mysteries, and long-range space opera stakes.
That range is a big part of what makes him easy to recommend.
Across the catalog, a few things show up again and again. Hystad likes characters who are thrown into systems they do not understand yet, whether that system is an alien occupation, a portal network, a hidden colony, or a town that has shifted somewhere it should not be. He also likes mixed groups, families, old friends, reluctant allies, and crews that have to learn how to work together while the ground keeps moving under them.
His horror is usually less about gore than atmosphere, memory, and unease. His science fiction tends to be idea-driven, but still rooted in people first. That balance helps explain why readers move pretty easily between his series. Even when the settings change, the engine is familiar: danger, mystery, and characters trying to stay human while everything around them gets stranger.
He has also built his career in a very modern indie way, by writing steadily, releasing often, and giving readers a lot to explore once they find him. If you are coming to Hystad for the first time, that is good news. There is a lot of ground here, from invasion stories and deep-space adventures to eerie small-town thrillers, and he has written enough that you can usually find a corner of his work that matches exactly what you are in the mood for.
