Series background & context

The Formless is one of Nathan Hystad's newer space-opera runs, and it starts with a familiar but effective shock, the sky fills with ships and Earth is suddenly outmatched. Ryan Pierce thought he had left conflict behind. He is living quietly in California wine country when the invasion begins, and that ordinary starting point gives the series a grounded way into a very large problem.

The invasion is only the first layer.

People are lifted off the planet through huge space elevators. Scout teams sweep the ground. Survival becomes immediate. But Ryan quickly learns that the beings attacking Earth may not be the whole story. The Formless, the Mediators, the Faction, and older interstellar rivalries all suggest that humanity has landed in the middle of something ancient rather than merely being targeted at random.

That is where the trilogy gets its shape. Ryan is not simply fighting off monsters. He is trying to work out who the real enemy is, who can be trusted, and what Earth will have to become if it wants to survive a second wave. Later books widen that pressure through figures like Solus and the larger question of whether Earth's own leaders are capable of acting before politics, fear, or pride wastes the time they have left.

The tone is straightforward and urgent.

These are books about invasion, response, and desperate alliances. Hystad keeps the technology and alien conflict readable, but he makes sure the emotional center stays clear. Ryan has to build a team, carry old instincts back into use, and decide how much risk is acceptable when the entire species is on the line.

If you like first-contact stories that quickly turn into military survival and then expand into a bigger interstellar mystery, The Formless is very much operating in that lane. It has the big-picture threat you would expect, but it also keeps returning to a simple human question, what do you do when saving your world means stepping into someone else's war?
