Space Race starts with a setup that feels almost playful by Nathan Hystad standards. Ten teams. One huge prize. A chance to win the future. Arlo Lewis has walked away from competition, but a corporate shake-up pulls him back into it and makes him captain of SeaTech's entry in a race with stakes that go far beyond bragging rights.

It does not stay playful for long.

The first book uses the competition well. Arlo is trying to lead a team, make peace with old disappointments, and survive a system where corporations still have too much power over ordinary people. That alone would be enough for a decent science-fiction thriller. But the trilogy keeps a bigger threat in reserve, and once that arrives the race becomes only the doorway.

That shift is what defines the series. By the time the story moves into Space Battle and Space Strike, the racers are no longer just contestants. Their ships, skills, rivalries, and hard-earned trust become tools for survival in a much larger conflict. Arlo has to work with people he once saw as enemies, carry intelligence across dangerous space, and decide who matters more when family, crew, and Earth itself all start making claims on him at once.

The trilogy is built for momentum.

Hystad likes characters who have to keep adapting faster than the world changes around them, and Arlo is a good example. He is not the loudest or flashiest hero in this catalog, but he fits the job. He is practical, a little worn down, and forced back into leadership just as the universe stops giving him small problems.

So what should you expect here? A fast trilogy that begins with a high-concept contest and grows into a more traditional survival-and-war story. The racing frame gives the opening book its own identity, then the later books cash in that setup by turning pilots into defenders. If you want something brisk, accessible, and built around one clean series arc, Space Race does the job well.
