Fractured Ruins
by Nathan Hystad
2027
With Colony Nine nearing rebellion and an enemy fleet approaching, Roman must uncover the Star Map’s purpose. Rescuing Ethan from a distant world requires a perilous journey that could determine whether humanity survives an ancient conflict.
Series background & context
Star Map is Nathan Hystad's science fiction adventure about a colony worker drawn into the mystery of an alien artifact. Roman Windsor expects a final assignment to be routine, but an impossible object above a frozen landscape gives him a question he cannot immediately answer. The series begins with the isolation of a distant settlement and opens into a wider conflict. Human colonization, unfamiliar technology, and the dangers of incomplete knowledge connect the books.
Roman's first challenge is understanding what happened while he was asleep.
In Star Map, he accepts a place on a Wake-Up crew and enters cryosleep for fifty years as part of the process of preparing a planet for humanity. He wakes to find the settlement destroyed and its people dead. No rescue is on its way. His companion is Bolt, a construction robot whose loyalty gives Roman support in a place that has otherwise fallen silent. Finding out what went wrong becomes inseparable from investigating the strange object he noticed before the long sleep began.
That opening makes the mystery immediate and practical. Roman needs information to survive, while the artifact points toward a history far beyond the colony's own. Bolt gives the story a partnership at a moment when the expected human community has vanished. The combination of a ruined settlement and a technologically advanced unknown creates the series' central tension: the object may offer answers, but Roman cannot assume that understanding it will make him safer. Exploring the aftermath of a disaster leads toward questions about who created the technology and why it matters.
The next installment, Colony Nine, takes the search into a galaxy at war. Roman travels with an unusual group that includes a colonist, an alien, and a robot. They possess the Compass, a component of the Star Map, and that possession makes them targets. Hunters want it, while an ancient warning raises further doubts about what the group is pursuing. Their route leads to a newer human colony and something concealed beneath its surface. The struggle over a relic therefore expands into a race between people with very different purposes.
Begin with Star Map and follow the sequence through Colony Nine and Fractured Ruins. The later story brings political instability and an approaching enemy fleet into the search for the artifact's purpose, increasing the cost of getting an answer wrong. This is a continuing adventure rather than a collection of independent missions. Readers can expect survival problems, travel, alien mysteries, and a small group facing much larger forces. Roman and Bolt provide a steady connection as the setting grows from one silent colony to a conflict that could threaten humanity's future.
