Series background & context

The Mountain Masters and Dark Havens books move the action from Florida to the high country and the city. In the Sierra mountains, brothers Jake and Logan Hunt run a wilderness lodge that caters quietly to guests who enjoy BDSM alongside hiking, fishing, or getting snowed in. Down in San Francisco, Dark Haven operates as a private dungeon where experienced Dominants, curious newcomers, and a handful of very wary submissives cross paths on club nights.

The series begins as mountain romance in Master of the Mountain, then widens into a web of connected stories. In Master of the Abyss, Jake juggles guilt from a former relationship and an increasingly dangerous killer on the mountain while falling for a tough wilderness guide. Later books like Master of the Dark Side and My Liege of Dark Haven spend more time inside the city club, following characters who first appeared at the lodge.

Sinclair often folds mystery and suspense into these books. Guests and locals face serial killers, stalkers, false accusations, and violent criminals who see the wilderness as an easy dumping ground. Doms and subs are not just playing safely negotiated scenes; they are also dealing with the fallout from war, bad families, and past relationships. A sadistic but honorable enforcer like deVries in Edge of the Enforcer or a traumatised Navy veteran in Master of Solitude carries those scars into every decision.

Dark Haven itself has a distinct flavor. Run by Xavier, the formal Dom known as my Liege, the club mixes strict etiquette with a very real sense of sanctuary. Some stories follow older characters who are starting over after divorce, like Rona in Simon Says: Mine. Others let established figures, such as Sir Ethan in I Will Not Beg, finally get the chance to heal someone whose past in the scene has been deeply damaging.

Across the series there is a strong sense of extended family. Lodge staff, Dark Haven regulars, and visiting characters overlap, show up in one another's books, and lend help when things go wrong. Outdoor scenes of rafting, riding, and survival training sit beside dungeon demonstrations and quiet evenings around the fire. The kink is part of everyday life rather than a secret double identity, and the characters wrestle with the same worries about trust, self worth, and commitment that mark Sinclair's other work.

Although the novels are written to be read alone, starting with Master of the Mountain and then following the reading order lets you watch relationships and running jokes develop. You also catch subtle crossovers with the Shadowlands series. If mountain towns, found family, and a mix of danger and intimacy sound appealing, this sequence offers a long stay in a world where a wilderness guide or a club owner might be exactly the safe place a character needs.
