Series background & context
The Wild Hunt Legacy series opens a door into Cherise Sinclair's shapeshifter universe. Here the Daonain, descendants of the fae Wild Hunt, live quietly in remote mountain towns. They age slowly, can shift between human and animal forms, and follow strict traditions designed to hide their existence from ordinary humans. At the edge of their territories, old forest roads, small inns, and isolated cabins become natural meeting points between the hidden world and the outside.
In Hour of the Lion, a human ex soldier arrives in one of those towns on a covert assignment and stumbles straight into Daonain politics. Later books, such as Winter of the Wolf and Eventide of the Bear, follow characters who already live inside the culture. Some are warriors tracking hellhoundlike creatures, some are loners haunted by captivity, and others are simply trying to keep a rundown lodge or shop afloat while danger closes in.
A recurring threat comes from human hunters who capture and experiment on shifters, using them as weapons. That tension drives much of the larger arc, especially as the Daonain struggle with whether to stay hidden or fight more openly. The series also explores internal rules about dominance, mating bonds, and the responsibilities of clan leaders. Sinclair uses those rules to shape both conflict and care, rather than as an excuse for cruelty.
Romances in this world often have a strong sense of pack. Several stories bring in multiple partners or tight knit triads, and almost all of them lean on found family when things turn dark. A heroine might arrive broken from years in foster care or abusive relationships, only to discover that her instincts and resilience make her a natural part of a Daonain clan. Heroes tend to be fierce protectors who still need to unlearn some very old habits.
As the series progresses into books like Leap of the Lion, Healing of the Wolf, Heart of the Wolf and Bonds of the Wolf, familiar side characters step into the spotlight. Readers see bookstore owners, quiet scouts, and scarred fighters claim their mates while trying to keep their territory safe from the human group known as the Scythe. The later novels deepen the sense of shared history and show how shifters who once felt like outsiders can anchor an entire community.
Each novel tells a complete love story, but the politics, friendships, and long running fight against the Scythe build from book to book. Starting with Hour of the Lion gives you the clearest view of how the Daonain world works. For readers who like paranormal romance with wilderness settings, pack bonds, and steady emotional stakes alongside the steamy parts, this series offers a rich, ongoing saga.
