The series starts with students and outsiders who do not fit neatly anywhere, then broadens into bigger magical politics, deeper power struggles, and a much larger sense of what the realms can hold.

In Angel and the Geek, Devon Hart is a witch whose tech-heavy way of working with magic already makes her stand out, and attending a prestigious academy only puts more pressure on her. In Dragon and the Gem, Sapphire Ardesia is one of the few demons allowed at school and lives under constant scrutiny because of what she is and what other people think that means. Roma clearly likes characters who enter the room already feeling watched.

Aegis Academy and the surrounding magical realms give the series its shape. Classes matter, but so do rivalries, bloodlines, mixed-species politics, and the way power gets judged before a character has a chance to define it for themselves. Rare gifts are useful here, but they also make people targets. That keeps the romance tied to something larger than attraction. Falling in love is one problem. Surviving the attention that comes with power is another.

The love stories fit Roma's usual lane, fated mates, intense protectiveness, and heroes who fall hard and fast, but the setting adds a slightly more playful edge. There are guardian angels, dragons, witches, demons, and other supernatural beings sharing the same space. That means the books can swing from class stress and social sniping to magical threats and realm-level consequences without feeling out of character.

Friendship matters almost as much as romance. The misfit label is not there just for flavor. These characters need their people. The academy experience, the prejudice they deal with, and the dangers tied to their gifts all make found family feel essential. Even as the series grows into bigger magical stakes, that outsider energy stays at the center.

If you like paranormal romance with a campus feel, a strong ensemble, and heroines who have to grow into unusual power, this series is easy to settle into. Read it in order if you can. The world gets richer as it goes, and part of the fun is watching the supposed misfits become some of the most important people in the room.
