Absence of Mercy

by Minerva Spencer

2020

Crimean War hero Jasper Lightner is exiled from London’s police to train detectives in volatile 1850s New York. Paired with disgraced inspector Hieronymus Law, he investigates a reformer’s brutal murder and uncovers corruption, gang rule, and a conspiracy that could tear the city apart.

Series background & context

Writing as S.M. Goodwin, Minerva Spencer steps away from romance and into historical mystery with the Lightner and Law books. These novels are set in the late 1850s, when New York City is teetering on the edge of political upheaval and policing is more about power than justice.

Inspector Jasper Lightner arrives from London as a decorated Crimean War veteran and once-celebrated detective. A head injury has stolen parts of his memory, and his titled father has used influence to exile him quietly across the Atlantic. New York’s fledgling police department expects an English expert who will fix their image without making too much trouble. Instead they get a man still learning where his own loyalties lie.

Hieronymus “Hy” Law is the local counterpart no one quite trusts. Irish American, rough around the edges, and tainted by accusations of corruption, he has investigated killings that the city’s elite would rather forget. Pairing Jasper with Hy is a gamble for everyone involved, including the detectives themselves.

In Absence of Mercy, a respected reformer is found murdered, and their inquiry exposes tensions between immigrant neighborhoods, entrenched political machines, and reform movements that are not as pure as they seem. The case forces Jasper to understand how different New York’s streets are from London’s, and whether his finely honed sense of order can survive the chaos.

Crooked in His Ways opens with the discovery of a dismembered financier, shipped in a crate of salt and returned to his home city like a bad debt. The investigation unspools a web of blackmail and old scandals reaching back over a decade, with a little black book of secrets at its center. As the detectives close in, the line between justice and survival grows thin.

The series leans into atmospheric detail: crowded tenements, corrupt officials, temperance societies, and sweltering summers. Violence is more present than in Spencer’s romances, and while there are emotional subplots, the focus stays on the partnership between Jasper and Hy, and on the cost of digging into crimes powerful people want buried.

Readers who enjoy historical fiction with strong sense of place, morally complicated protagonists, and intricate plotting will find a lot to appreciate here.
