Balthazar: The Spare

by Minerva Spencer

2023

Raised in a free-love utopian community in New York, Balthazar Hale wants nothing to do with the English dukedom that suddenly controls his fate. In London he falls for companion Victoria Dryden, whose dangerous secrets make her entirely unsuitable and entirely irresistible.

Series background & context

Under the S.M. LaViolette name, Minerva Spencer introduces the Hales, an unconventional American family dropped into the middle of rigid English high society. The series is sometimes called The Hale Saga or Americans in London, and it blends fish-out-of-water comedy with intense, very steamy romance.

The Hale siblings grow up in a utopian community in upstate New York, where ideas about sex, religion, and ownership are far looser than anything the British aristocracy would tolerate. When their father dies, they discover not only that they have an older half brother in England, but that he has inherited a dukedom and legal guardianship over them all. Overnight, their freewheeling world shrinks to ballrooms, drawing rooms, and a guardian determined to mold them into respectable peers and spouses.

Balthazar: The Spare focuses on the most restless of the siblings. Balthazar Hale wants nothing more than to escape back to a life where he does not have to bow to a title. His plans are complicated by Victoria Dryden, a woman with secrets of her own, whose position in a respectable household hides dangerous vulnerabilities. Their romance plays out against a backdrop of culture shock, class tension, and the question of whether Balthazar can reconcile his upbringing with the responsibilities he never asked for.

In Io: The Shrew, Lady Io Hale has already decided that English society is not for her. Sharp-tongued, politically minded, and uninterested in playing the sweet debutante, she locks horns with Corbin Masterson, her brother’s older, oh-so-proper best friend. He prides himself on his moral restraint and disdain for the Hales’ scandalous background. Io treats that attitude as a challenge. Their enemies-to-lovers story is full of verbal sparring, thwarted good intentions, and the slow realization that neither one can quite imagine a future without the other.

Future books will give the remaining Hale siblings their turns, weaving together threads of class warfare, family loyalty, and sexual freedom. The series asks what happens when people raised to question every rule about ownership and desire are forced into a world where lineage is everything.

If you enjoy historical romance where Americans collide noisily with the ton, where family members argue as fiercely as they protect one another, and where the heat level runs high, the Hale books are an excellent fit.
