The First Blade of Ostia

by Duncan M Hamilton

2014

In the duelling city of Ostia, Bryn Pendollo has spent his life chasing the dream of becoming the First Blade of the arena. When years of sacrifice finally bring him within reach, he discovers that the rival standing in his way is also his closest friend, and ambition may cost them both more than honour.

Series background & context

Middle Sea is less a single, tightly plotted series and more a corner of Duncan M. Hamilton’s wider world where he tells shorter, swashbuckling tales. Set around a warm inland sea dotted with city states and trading ports, it shares its geography with Society of the Sword but focuses on different characters and moments in time.

The culture here is obsessed with honour, style, and steel. Professional duellists earn fame and coin in the arena, fencing masters run prestigious academies, and nobles settle grudges at the point of a rapier rather than on a battlefield. It is a setting that lets Hamilton indulge his love of one on one combat and flair filled swordplay.

The Swordsman of Tanosa introduces Bafion, a once celebrated swordsman now fallen on hard times. His fine manners and skill with a blade hint at a past he refuses to discuss, even with the underworld patrons who hire him as muscle. When one crime boss offers him a contract rich enough to buy a new life, Bafion has to return to the city and the people he walked away from. The job forces him to confront old choices, draw steel more often than he would like, and decide whether revenge or mercy will define his future.

The First Blade of Ostia shifts the focus to the duelling mad city of Ostia, where the title of First Blade is the highest honour a professional swordsman can win. Bryn Pendollo grows up watching arena fights and dreaming of reaching that rank. After years of training he finally becomes a professional duellist, only to find that the man standing between him and his childhood dream is also his closest friend. Amero dal Moreno, born into high expectations and hungry for a path of his own, cannot simply step aside.

Their rivalry plays out in a city that lives and dies by reputation. Every contest has social as well as personal stakes, and the costs of victory are not just paid in blood. Hamilton uses the relationship between Bryn and Amero to explore questions of loyalty, ambition, and what happens when the roles society hands you no longer fit.

Both stories stand alone and can be read without prior knowledge, but they reward readers who have journeyed through Society of the Sword by showing familiar places and names from fresh angles. Together they sketch a Middle Sea where the clash of blades is as much about identity as it is about survival.
