Series background & context

Blood of Kings returns to the Middle Sea world and asks what happens when the monsters people tell stories about decide to come back. At its centre is Conrad, a boy from a quiet farm in the Northlands whose life is shattered in a single night when creatures from the dark step out into the open.

Conrad survives that first attack, but survival is all he wins. Demons, long thought to be on the verge of extinction, prove that they have only been waiting. Rescued by a small band of hardened mercenaries, Conrad is taken under their wing and offered a place as their squire. It is a rough education in steel and strategy, but it also gives him something to live for beyond his grief.

The first book tracks Conrad’s early years with this ragged company as he trains, learns what demons really are, and discovers that his own blood may be bound up with the threat they pose. The Principality that rules his homeland has grown complacent. Most people treat the old tales as history, not warning, and the few who still hunt demons are spread too thin.

By the time of the second volume the world has moved on. Conrad has finished his time at the academy and earned his place as a banneret, one of the elite swordsmen who have the right to bear arms in the cities. The years of quiet are over. Demons are returning stronger, smarter, and faster than before, and the cost of previous neglect has to be paid. Conrad and his old comrades are brought together again, alongside an Intelligencier and a grey priest, to uncover who is driving the resurgence and why.

The final book raises the conflict to its natural scale. Demon legions are beginning to gather and Fanrac, a figure out of dark legend, steps from the shadows to make his own grab for power. Monarchs around the Middle Sea are forced to put aside rivalries and ready their armies, knowing that steel alone will not be enough. Conrad’s strange heritage becomes a weapon everyone wants to use, and he has to master the power in his blood before it masters him.

Taken together, Blood of Kings mixes demon hunting and battlefield action with road journeys, academy politics, and the small relationships that grow inside a tight knit company. It is a natural next step for readers who enjoyed Society of the Sword or Wolf of the North and want something a little darker and more monster driven.
