Author bio
Duncan M. Hamilton writes the kind of fantasy and science fiction he loves to read, full of sword fights, shattered oaths, and people pushed into hard choices. Over the last decade he has built several connected worlds that readers drop into for big adventures and stay in for the characters.
Hamilton came to fiction with a deep habit of reading and a strong pull toward history. He studied both History and Law at postgraduate level, picking up two Master’s degrees along the way, and spent years working as a barrister before deciding that the stories in his head were no longer content to stay there.
Law is a profession built on stories and arguments, and he carried both into his fiction.
Those years in practice left their mark. His novels often turn on questions of power, duty, and who gets to decide what is just, whether that is a prince bishop hunting dragons, a demon haunted noble, or a naval officer on the edge of known space. The courtroom may be gone, but the arguments remain.
The first of those stories to reach readers was The Tattered Banner, published in 2013. Set in a world where magic is outlawed and swordsmanship decides status, it follows street kid Soren to a prestigious fencing academy and then far beyond it. The book quietly found an audience and ended up on a year end list of notable fantasy novels, giving Hamilton the confidence to keep expanding the setting.
From there the Middle Sea world grew into the swashbuckling Society of the Sword trilogy and the linked Middle Sea tales The Swordsman of Tanosa and The First Blade of Ostia. He then shifted north into harsher country for the Wolf of the North books, a Norse inspired saga about Wulfric, a bullied boy reshaped by war, old gods, and an ancient gift he barely understands.
Later series pushed his world building in new directions. The Dragonslayer trilogy drops a washed up former dragonslayer, a young mage, and a scheming prince bishop into a faux French kingdom where dragons are not as extinct as everyone believes. Blood of Kings widens the canvas again, following Conrad from a demon ravaged farmstead into a continent spanning fight to stop those same horrors returning.
Hamilton also stepped into science fiction with the Alpha Protocol books, which track Navy officer Jack Samson out to the frontier of human space and straight into the ruins of an ancient alien civilisation. The through line is the same as in his fantasy work, though, with an emphasis on tight action scenes, clear stakes, and characters trying to do the right thing with limited information.
He lives in Ireland, not far from the sea, and when he is not writing he tends to be moving or making things with his hands. Swimming, cycling, and painting tabletop war game miniatures all compete for his time. The result is an unusual mix of careful historical research, plainspoken prose, and stories that feel like they were told by someone who has spent a long time thinking about how people fight, scheme, and keep going when the odds are bad.
