Author bio
Michael Lister was born in Tallahassee, Florida, in 1968 and grew up in Wewahitchka, a small North Florida town near the Gulf and the Apalachicola River. That landscape never really left him. Rivers, swamps, back roads, beach towns, storms, and the particular mix of beauty and danger in the Florida Panhandle still run through his fiction.
He was drawn to story early. He has said that Southern storytelling, the tales people told around him growing up, helped shape his imagination. Later he studied theology, with an emphasis on myth and narrative, which helps explain why his books often care as much about why people do things as about who did them.
Before writing full time, Lister did a little of everything.
He taught high school, worked at the college level, owned a bookstore, wrote and edited for newspapers, ran a community theater, and worked on plays, screenplays, and public speaking. In the early 1990s he also became the youngest chaplain in the Florida Department of Corrections. He spent nearly a decade serving at prisons in the Panhandle, and that experience gave him the core idea for his first novel, Power in the Blood, published in 1997.
That book introduced John Jordan, an ex-cop turned prison chaplain, and it set the direction of Lister's best-known work. The long-running John Jordan series became the backbone of his career, blending mysteries with questions about guilt, mercy, justice, addiction, family, and faith. Readers who like crime fiction with a strong sense of place often start there, then keep going through books like Blood of the Lamb, The Body and the Blood, and Blood Sacrifice.
But John Jordan is only one side of what Lister does.
He has also written the Burke and Blade mysteries, set around Panama City Beach and focused on missing persons cases, along with the Jimmy "Soldier" Riley novels, which bring a hard-boiled 1940s noir feel to wartime Florida. Then there are standalones and side roads, including Double Exposure, about a wildlife photographer who captures a crime on camera, and Burnt Offerings, a fire-haunted thriller that pairs forensics with ritual crime.
A lot of his books return to the same kinds of pressure points. People disappear. Cold cases refuse to stay buried. The wild beauty of North Florida becomes part of the danger. His protagonists are often bruised, thoughtful, and trying to do decent work in bad circumstances. Even when the plots move fast, there is usually a human question sitting underneath them.
These days Lister still lives in North Florida. Alongside writing, he has remained active as a speaker and singer-songwriter, and he has talked openly about how much story, music, and everyday life feed one another for him. That mix of crime, reflection, place, and personal history is what makes his body of work feel so connected, even when he moves from prison mystery to beach noir to nonfiction about meaning.
