One of the pleasures of the series is the atmosphere. Lister writes the wartime city as a living place, humid, coastal, crowded, morally slippery, and always a little dangerous after dark. The war is not background wallpaper. It shapes jobs, movement, prejudice, romance, and the sense that life can turn hard in a moment.
