Series background & context
Lucas Burke and Alix "Blade" Baker are not polished, comfortable private eyes. They are foster-care survivors who built their own family the hard way, and that history shapes everything they do. By the time the series opens, they are working as investigators in Panama City Beach, with a special focus on missing persons cases.
That specialty is personal. Years earlier, their own sister disappeared, and they have never stopped living with that loss. Every missing woman, missing child, or cold case they take on touches that nerve. The books use that emotional engine well, because it gives the investigations urgency without turning the characters into superheroes. Burke and Blade care because they know what it feels like when nobody comes back.
The cases are built around vanishings that seem almost impossible at first glance. In The Night Of, a mother and baby disappear while on vacation. In The Night in Question, an old storm-night disappearance still haunts everyone involved. All Night Long, Dark of Night, Dead of Night, Still of the Night, and Day and Night keep returning to the same question in different forms, how does someone disappear in plain sight, and who benefits when the truth stays buried?
The setting matters here too.
Panama City Beach gives the series its bright surface and its darker underside. Tourist bars, condo towers, gated homes, storm season, and beach-town gossip all feed the stories. Lister uses the place well, because it can look carefree one moment and deeply uneasy the next. That contrast suits Burke and Blade, who bring grit and gallows humor into rooms where other people would rather look away.
The tone is fast and readable, but the books also make room for loyalty, trauma, romance, family strain, and the improvised households people build after bad beginnings. Burke is analytical and intense. Blade is sharp, practical, and unafraid to push back. Together they feel like true partners rather than a stock detective pair.
If you like missing-person mysteries with strong emotional stakes, a Florida setting, and investigators who have to fight for every answer, this series has a lot to offer. The cases stand alone, but reading in order lets you watch the found family around Burke and Blade grow, fray, and hold together.
