Series background & context
John Jordan is one of Michael Lister's signature detectives, and he is an unusual one. He starts as an ex-cop working as a prison chaplain in the Florida Panhandle, later moves back into investigative work, and carries both roles with him. He notices things like a detective, but he also listens like a counselor, which gives the series a different feel from a standard police procedural.
The early books place Jordan inside and around Potter Correctional Institution, where the walls, locked gates, and uneasy balance between inmates and staff shape every case. Power in the Blood, Blood of the Lamb, and The Body and the Blood use that world especially well. The prison is not just a backdrop. It is a pressure cooker, full of secrets, bargains, fear, and people who think they can hide the truth.
Outside the prison, the series widens into the rivers, swamps, beach towns, and storm-hit communities of North Florida. Missing children, cold cases, locked-room puzzles, serial predators, activist targets, and old family wounds all find their way onto John's desk. Books like Blood Work, Cold Blood, Blood Ties, and And the Sea Became Blood show how flexible the series can be while still feeling like the same world.
John himself is what holds it together.
He is compassionate, stubborn, and sometimes worn thin by the weight of what he sees. His struggles with sobriety, guilt, love, faith, and family are part of the ongoing story, but the novels never forget to deliver a real mystery. That balance is a big part of the appeal. You can come for the whodunit and stay for the person trying to solve it without losing himself.
The tone is thoughtful without slowing down, and the setting matters on nearly every page. North Florida here is not postcard Florida. It is river mud, pine woods, roadside churches, prison yards, hurricane damage, and towns where people know too much about one another. If you like mystery series that mix atmosphere, moral pressure, and fair-play puzzle elements, John Jordan is a very good place to settle in.
It is also an easy series to start. The character arc grows richer in order, but each book brings its own case and its own stakes.
