Mercenary Maidens Books in Order

The Mercenary Maidens books are some of Madeline Martin's fastest, sharpest romances. This series takes the Highland setting and adds espionage, covert training, and heroines who have to learn how to survive by using far more than charm. If you want historical romance with a stronger adventure spine, this is one of her clearest fits.

The basic setup is strong from the start. Connor Grant is not looking for a bride in Highland Spy. He is building and leading a group of female operatives, women who can fight, deceive, pass messages, and move where men might draw too much attention. Ariana is the first heroine readers meet, a woman with no money, no family, and just enough skill at cheating cards to catch Connor's eye. Highland Ruse follows Delilah, who is pulled into impersonation and a kidnapping scheme after her life at court collapses. Highland Wrath turns darker, with Sylvi driven by revenge and trained to kill.

These women are not amateurs for long.

That is what gives the series its energy. Training matters here. Cover identities matter. Missions matter. The romances grow in the middle of active danger, which makes attraction feel risky instead of merely inconvenient. The men are still lairds, fighters, and strong romantic leads, but the heroines do not orbit them. They have their own objectives, loyalties, and scars.

The Scottish setting still counts for a lot. Castles, clan politics, and contested loyalties shape the missions as much as the love stories. So does the question of service to the Crown, because what looks noble from one angle can look exploitative from another. Martin gets useful tension out of that. Her characters are often balancing personal survival against larger political goals they do not fully control.

If you like romance where the plot would still be interesting even without the central couple, Mercenary Maidens is a strong bet. The chemistry is there, but so are the disguises, field assignments, betrayals, and dangerous alliances. Read these in order if you can, because the spy network itself becomes part of the fun, and each book expands the world a little more while keeping the pace high.
