The London School for Ladies books sit on the Regency side of Madeline Martin's work, trading Highland strongholds for ballrooms, whispered scandal, and the sharp rules of polite society. Even so, the stakes are not small. Reputation, money, war, and class pressure all shape the choices the characters have to make.

The series includes How to Tempt a Duke, How to Start a Scandal, and How to Wed a Courtesan. Each book centers on a couple facing a slightly different version of the same question: what happens when society has already decided who you are, and that version does not leave much room for happiness? Eleanor is suddenly a target of gossip and needs a husband fast. Seth returns from Waterloo carrying the weight of war into a glittering marriage market. Lottie has survived enough to know that respectability alone does not mean safety.

These are compact books, but they are not flimsy ones.

Martin makes good use of the Harlequin Historical format here. The plots move quickly, the emotional stakes are clear, and the characters usually have to deal with both attraction and a real obstacle rooted in their world. That obstacle might be scandal, trauma, poverty, or the brutal way society treats a woman whose past no longer fits its rules. The romances still deliver warmth and longing, but there is usually a hard edge underneath.

The heroes are dukes and earls, yes, but they are not simply decorative titles. Charles becomes temptation when Eleanor most needs control. Seth is changed by war in ways a ballroom cannot hide. Evander must look past what society says about Lottie if he wants any real future with her. In each case, the relationship only works if both people are willing to see beyond the role the ton expects them to play.

If you like Regency romance with straightforward storytelling, strong emotional hooks, and heroines who do not fit neatly into society's preferred boxes, this series is worth a look. The books are loosely connected, so they can be read individually, but together they give a nice snapshot of Martin's Regency voice, tender, fast-moving, and interested in the gap between what society rewards and what people actually need.
