Author bio

Madeline Martin grew up in a military family and spent much of her childhood in Germany, moving often enough to develop a strong feel for history, place, and the quiet refuge of books. That early mix of travel and old-world settings still runs through her fiction, whether she is writing about London during the Blitz, occupied Warsaw, Victorian England, or the dangerous borderlands of medieval Scotland.

She writes both historical fiction and historical romance, and the link between the two sides of her career is easy to spot. She likes women who are underestimated, cornered, or told to keep their heads down, then puts them in situations where courage, wit, and stubbornness matter. Her books are heavily researched, but they tend to feel warm and readable rather than distant or formal.

For years, she wrote while building a long career in corporate America. She has said that becoming a full-time author took more than fifteen years of work, which makes her career feel less like an overnight leap and more like a very determined climb.

That persistence shows.

On the romance side, many readers meet her through Scottish and Regency stories like Deception of a Highlander, Highland Spy, How to Tempt a Duke, or The Earl's Hoyden. These books lean into big feelings, danger, and fast-moving plots. There are spies, smugglers, lairds, rebels, matchmaking schemes, forced proximity, and women who are usually far more capable than society expects them to be.

Her later historical fiction brought her to a much wider audience. The Last Bookshop in London follows Grace Bennett through the Blitz and a dusty bookshop that becomes a lifeline. The Librarian Spy moves between Lisbon and occupied France, while The Keeper of Hidden Books turns to wartime Warsaw and the fight to preserve both people and culture. The Booklover's Library and The Secret Book Society continue that thread, looking at the way reading, friendship, and community can become acts of survival. Her books have also been translated into more than twenty-five languages.

Books matter in Madeline Martin novels. So do friendship, resilience, and the small human choices that keep hope alive.

She now lives in Florida with her husband, two daughters, and two very spoiled cats. On her own bio page she comes across the way her books often do, friendly, funny, and happy to talk about research, Disney trips, Nutella, and cat videos in the same breath. It suits her work. Even when she is writing about war, loss, or social constraint, she keeps her attention on ordinary people trying to make a life inside history.
