Megan Whalen Turner Books in Order

Megan Whalen Turner was born in 1965 at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, and grew up moving from place to place in the United States. She was the youngest of four children, and she has said that by the time she was ten she already wanted to be a writer, mostly because she loved reading and wanted more stories than the shelves were giving her.

She studied English language and literature at the University of Chicago and graduated with honors in 1987. After college, she spent seven or eight years working as a children's bookseller and book buyer in Chicago and Washington, D.C. That was practical training as much as a job. Day after day, she was around children's books, young readers, and the small details that make a story memorable.

Bookselling turned out to be a pretty good apprenticeship.

Turner published her first book, Instead of Three Wishes, in 1995. It is a short story collection, full of everyday settings nudged sideways by magic, irony, and dry humor. She has said that stories felt easier to begin with than a full novel, and that she started writing more seriously while pregnant with her first child, when life briefly made a little room for it.

A trip to Greece helped unlock the novel that changed everything. Turner wanted a fantasy setting that did not feel like reheated medieval England, and the landscapes, myths, and history she had been thinking about gave her the right texture. The result was The Thief in 1996, a lean adventure about a boastful young prisoner named Gen, a scholar called the magus, and a mission to steal the legendary Hamiathes's Gift. The book won a Newbery Honor in 1997.

From there, Turner built the sequence most readers know her for, often called the Queen's Thief series. The Queen of Attolia made the books darker and more intimate. The King of Attolia turned court life, rumor, and strategy into gripping drama. A Conspiracy of Kings widened the story through Sophos, the reluctant heir to Sounis, and later Thick as Thieves shifted the view again through Kamet, a Mede secretary and slave trying to survive. Return of the Thief brought the long arc to its close, and Moira's Pen later gathered stories and companion pieces from that world. Along the way, the series won the Mythopoeic Award, and A Conspiracy of Kings won the Los Angeles Times Book Prize for Young Adult Literature.

What readers tend to love most is the misdirection.

Turner writes fantasy that trusts you to pay attention. Her books are full of plans inside plans, but they are also funny, especially when Gen is on the page, and unexpectedly tender about friendship, duty, love, faith, and the cost of power. She returns again and again to people who are underestimated, trapped by their role, or dismissed for what they seem to be. Her settings feel Mediterranean and ancient without becoming historical reenactments, and her gods are always close enough to make people wonder what is luck, what is politics, and what is fate.

She has kept much of her private life private, which suits the sly reserve of her fiction. A few things are well known: her husband, Mark Turner, is a cognitive scientist, and the family's moves for his academic work have taken them to places including Ohio, California, and Norway. That sense of motion seems to fit her as a writer. Her stories are full of roads, sea crossings, borderlands, and people who know that the map is never the whole story.
