4th & Girl

by Max Monroe

2018

Rookie cornerback Leo Landry is the New York Mavericks’ first round draft pick, desperate to prove he belongs in the league. A chance encounter with a pint sized bombshell derails his focus, and soon the biggest play he is chasing is a shot at the girl who keeps distracting him.

Series background & context

Mavericks Tackle Love centers on the New York Mavericks, the same pro football team that shows up in the Billionaire Bad Boys books, but this time the players themselves take the lead. Each installment follows a different Maverick as he tries to balance the pressure of the league with the equally tricky business of falling in love.

In Wildcat, quarterback Quinn Bailey is at the top of his game and expected to carry the franchise on his shoulders. Football is supposed to be his only focus, but an unexpected encounter with a woman who literally drops into his life knocks him off balance. The story explores what happens when the face of a team is forced to admit that he wants something more than stats and trophies.

Later books move through other positions on the roster. One story spotlights a player whose bachelor lifestyle is interrupted by a woman who refuses to be just another casual hookup. Another digs into the chaos that follows a wild bachelor party gone wrong, where a tight end’s night with a mysterious dancer has very real consequences. In 4th & Girl, rookie cornerback Leo Landry juggles the pressure of proving himself on the field with the distraction of a pint sized blond who appears at exactly the wrong time.

What ties the series together is the sense of team. The locker room banter, road trip rituals, and in jokes make the Mavericks feel like a found family. Characters from earlier books constantly pop up in later ones, offering comic relief, brutal honesty, and the occasional shove in the right direction.

The romances themselves lean comedic and sexy rather than angsty. You get fake dating, opposites attract, secret identity twists, and plenty of sports metaphors used in wildly inappropriate ways. Games, practices, and media obligations serve as the backdrop, but the real stakes are emotional: can these men learn to show up off the field as fully as they do on it?

If you like sports romance that focuses as much on camaraderie as on competition, Mavericks Tackle Love is a natural follow up after the Wes Lancaster portions of Billionaire Bad Boys. You can read the books as standalones, but reading in order lets you watch the team and relationships develop over multiple seasons.
