Series background & context

The Stone Cold Fox Trilogy is Max Monroe’s foray into romantic suspense, told in three tightly linked books that should be read in order. It trades New York boardrooms and bright hospital lights for a small Montana town with a notorious past and a pair of leads who cannot quite decide whether to trust or hate each other.

The story begins in Stone, when actress Ivy Stone travels to Cold, Montana, to star in a film about the town’s infamous serial killer, known as the Cold Hearted Killer. For most people in Cold, the murders are something they would rather forget. For Levi Fox, the lead detective whose partner was one of the victims, the case is still very much alive.

Their first meeting is a disaster: he pulls her over for speeding on her way into town, and the mutual dislike is instant. Levi sees Hollywood as exploitative and shallow; Ivy sees him as arrogant, controlling, and determined to make her job harder than it needs to be. But the production needs access to real case details, and Levi is assigned as the official liaison, forcing them into constant contact.

As the trilogy unfolds through Cold and Fox, the tone shifts from enemies to reluctant allies to something much deeper. Strange events suggest the killer might not be as distant as everyone believes, and Ivy finds herself the target of very real danger. Levi’s need to protect her clashes with his guilt, his unresolved grief, and his fear of letting anyone close again.

Unlike the pure romcom series, these books lean into tension and atmosphere. There are clues, twists, and genuine moments of fear alongside the slow burn romance. The small town setting matters, too: gossip spreads fast, loyalties are tangled, and nearly everyone is carrying some kind of secret.

Emotionally, the trilogy is about two people learning to live with trauma without letting it define them. Ivy has to separate the role she is playing from the real people involved, and Levi has to accept that justice and closure do not always look the way you want them to. Their relationship grows in the middle of that messy process.

By the end of Fox, the central mystery is resolved and the romantic arc reaches a hard won payoff. If you enjoy binge reading one long, interconnected story, or if you like your romance served with a side of danger and small town eeriness, Stone Cold Fox is a compelling change of pace from the lighter side of Max Monroe.
