Matthew Legare Books in Order

Matthew Legare writes historical thrillers that spend time in the uneasy years before World War II. His books combine crimes, conspiracies, political pressure, and the daily texture of cities that are often treated as background in larger histories.

He made his fiction debut with Shadows of Tokyo in 2018. Set in Tokyo in late 1931, the novel introduces Police Inspector Kenji Aizawa and Reiko Watanabe, a geisha caught close to a dangerous political plot. It also set the pattern for much of Legare's work: a fast-moving mystery built around a real period of turmoil.

The setting is a big part of the appeal. Legare's stories look past the simple idea of prewar Japan as one uniform force, focusing instead on competing political groups, criminal networks, social change, and people trying to get through unstable times.

The Reiko Watanabe and Inspector Aizawa novels form the heart of his bibliography. In Shadows of Tokyo, the pair work to stop an assassination and a planned coup. Smoke Over Tokyo sends them into the orbit of a powerful crime family, while Treason in Tokyo brings them into a case involving radical politics and the film world. In Secrets Beneath Tokyo, they face arson, a secret police unit, and a city full of buried grudges.

Tokyo is never just scenery in these books.

Aizawa is an upright policeman who has to navigate institutions that do not always deserve his trust. Reiko has access to rooms, conversations, and people that official investigators cannot easily reach. Their uneasy partnership gives the series its center, with each case testing both their loyalty and their judgment.

Legare later moved the action to Shanghai with Shanghai Twilight. Its lead, Tom Lai, is a Chinese American nightclub owner trying to clear his name after being accused of spying for Japan in 1932. The follow-up, Reds and Whites, returns to Tom in 1937, when Shanghai's international rivalries, criminal factions, and looming war leave him with few safe choices.

Those novels lean into noir. Nightclubs, docks, gangsters, diplomats, and spies all have a place, but the personal stakes stay close to Tom as he tries to hold on to a future in a city where allegiances shift quickly.

Legare also turned to the United States for An American Putsch. Set in Depression-era New York, it follows private investigator Max Dietrich as a stolen-arms job draws him toward a threat to American democracy. The change of country shows the same interest in the 1930s from another angle: fear, ideology, money, and old war wounds colliding in public life.

He has continued to return to Aizawa and Reiko, including the shorter Poison Across Tokyo. Across the novels and novella, Legare's work is for readers who like historical settings that do not sit quietly in the background, and mysteries where a single case can open onto much larger trouble.
