Matthew Quick Books in Order

Matthew Quick grew up in Oaklyn, New Jersey, a small town across the Delaware River from Philadelphia. He has described himself as an introverted kid, and writing gave him a way to reach beyond that quietness. In elementary school, a teacher praised a short story he wrote, a small moment that stayed with him.

After Collingswood High School, Quick studied English literature and secondary education at La Salle University. He later earned an MFA in creative writing from Goddard College. Before publishing fiction, he taught English and literature at Haddonfield Memorial High School in southern New Jersey.

Teaching kept him close to the pressures young people carry, the friendships that help, and the ways people sometimes cover pain with jokes or silence. Those concerns would become a steady part of his work. He eventually left teaching to focus on writing his first novel.

The change was risky, but he kept writing.

In 2008, Quick published The Silver Linings Playbook, the story of Pat Peoples, a man returning home after psychiatric treatment while trying to rebuild his life. The novel blends family strain, football, romantic confusion, and Pat's stubborn belief that a happy ending is still possible. Readers often come to it for its humor, then stay for its compassion toward people doing their best with messy lives.

The book became a New York Times bestseller and was adapted into the 2012 film Silver Linings Playbook. That adaptation brought Quick's work to a wider audience, but the novel's close first-person voice remains its own experience, more interested in Pat's uneven day-to-day progress than in easy answers.

Quick soon wrote for teen readers as well. Sorta Like a Rock Star follows resilient Amber Appleton as she builds a community around herself despite unstable circumstances. In Boy21, basketball becomes common ground for two boys dealing with grief, danger, and the hope of getting out of a hard place. Forgive Me, Leonard Peacock spends one tense day with a teenager in crisis, while Every Exquisite Thing follows a dutiful student who begins questioning the life she has been expected to live.

His characters rarely have tidy lives.

His adult novels keep returning to people at turning points. The Good Luck of Right Now centers on a sheltered man learning how to live after his mother's death. Love May Fail sends a woman back to South Jersey in search of the teacher who once believed in her. The Reason You're Alive looks at a Vietnam veteran facing old damage, and We Are the Light brings together grieving neighbors after a devastating act of violence.

Across both adult and young adult fiction, Quick writes about family, loss, mental health, faith, friendship, and second chances. His books can be funny, awkward, and painful in the same chapter. They make room for people who don't have the right words yet, but are still trying to connect.
