Matthew Legare's Reiko Watanabe & Inspector Aizawa series follows an unlikely investigative pair through 1930s Tokyo. These are historical crime thrillers, but the history stays close to the action: coups, political factions, police corruption, organized crime, and international tension all create problems that cannot be solved with a routine arrest.

Kenji Aizawa is a Tokyo police inspector who values evidence and procedure, even when the people above him want a quicker or more convenient answer. Reiko Watanabe is a geisha and covert source whose life places her near men with influence, secrets, and dangerous ambitions. She can enter worlds that Aizawa cannot, but every favor and conversation comes with a cost.

Their first case, Shadows of Tokyo, begins with a warning about an assassination in December 1931. It draws them into a conspiracy involving right-wing militants and men close to power. In Smoke Over Tokyo, a suspicious death brings Reiko undercover near the Okamura Gang, where a family struggle has consequences well beyond the underworld.

The trouble only gets broader.

Treason in Tokyo is set in January 1933 and follows an attack claimed by the Red Terror Society, forcing Aizawa into an uneasy alliance with the Thought Police. Reiko's work in the film industry gives her a separate route into the case. Secrets Beneath Tokyo, set in 1934, combines a string of fires with a vigilante police unit targeting corrupt businessmen.

The books have the pace and shadowy atmosphere of noir, but their characters face problems rooted in their particular moment. Tokyo is modernizing quickly, while its political life is becoming more violent and less predictable. Geisha districts, newspaper offices, police stations, theaters, criminal networks, and elite households all become part of the investigation.

Aizawa and Reiko make a strong contrast. He is tied to the law but suspicious of the forces shaping it. She has more room to improvise, yet she is exposed in ways he is not. The series builds its suspense from the gaps between what each of them knows, what they can prove, and whom they can trust.
