The Matthew Corbett novels are historical thrillers set in the late 1600s and early 1700s, following a young clerk who grows into a professional "problem solver" in a world that is still half wilderness and half superstition. In Speaks the Nightbird, Matthew travels with traveling magistrate Isaac Woodward to the struggling settlement of Fount Royal in 1699. The town is convinced that a beautiful widow, Rachel Howarth, is a witch responsible for murder, crop failure, and every misfortune that has hit the community. Woodward is there to conduct the trial; Matthew, young and skeptical, begins to doubt the evidence and quietly investigate on his own. What starts as a witchcraft case turns into a layered mystery about greed, land, and the stories people tell themselves to justify cruelty.

Five years later, The Queen of Bedlam finds Matthew in Manhattan, working as a magistrate's clerk and chafing at the limits of that job. He is drawn into the hunt for the Masker, a serial killer stalking prominent men in the city, and into the orbit of the Herrald Agency, a London-based firm that solves problems too delicate for official channels. This book establishes many of the series' key threads: Matthew's complicated feelings about his orphanage past, his sense of justice, and his first brush with the unseen criminal mastermind Professor Fell.

From there the books widen and darken. Mister Slaughter sends Matthew and his mentor Hudson Greathouse out of New York to escort a notorious mass murderer, Tyranthus Slaughter, from an asylum to a waiting ship, only to see their prisoner escape and carve a bloody path through the Pennsylvania wilderness. The Providence Rider pulls Matthew into the heart of Professor Fell's empire on a remote island, forcing him to act as investigator inside a den of thieves and killers.

Later volumes keep raising the personal and geographic stakes. The River of Souls strands Matthew in Carolina swampland, chasing an accused killer upriver while something inhuman seems to move through the reeds alongside the hunting party. Freedom of the Mask carries him to London and the inside of Newgate Prison. Cardinal Black and The King of Shadows pull him into increasingly baroque plots involving stolen grimoires, drug experiments, crime families, and a mysterious island called Golgotha where reality itself feels shaky.

The series also makes room for side stories. The collection Seven Shades of Evil gathers novellas and short pieces that fill in gaps in the timeline, following Matthew and his friends through smaller cases: a suspicious country manor, a nightmare carriage ride, a river voyage gone wrong. Finally, Leviathan brings the long hunt for a demon-summoning mirror to a close, testing Matthew's alliances and beliefs as he tries to end his entanglement with Professor Fell and find his way home.

Across all of these books, the tone blends swashbuckling adventure with careful historical detail. McCammon is as interested in the smell of the streets, the mechanics of printing presses, and the politics of colonial trade as he is in duels on rooftops or eerie encounters in forests. Matthew himself is not a superhero; he is brave, often in over his head, capable of mistakes and haunted by past decisions. That mix of energy, atmosphere, and fallible heroism is what gives the Matthew Corbett series its distinctive pull.
