Author bio
Matt Shaw is a British writer whose work includes psychological horror, supernatural stories and extreme horror. He also writes thrillers and has published children's fiction under the name Mr. E. Scares. His adult books often use disturbing situations to explore control, desperation and the distance between what a character wants and what another person experiences. The range of his bibliography is useful to know before choosing a first title, because his quieter suspense and his most graphic work offer different kinds of reading experience.
He began writing when he was about twelve.
Shaw has described an early attempt at a parody of the television comedy Red Dwarf, followed by screenplays written because he wanted to make films. Rejection did not put an end to those ambitions. He later returned to fiction and adapted some of his old screenplay ideas into stories. That background helps explain his interest in tightly constructed situations: characters enter a problem, their choices narrow, and the reader has to reconsider what might happen next.
Happy Ever After became one of his early continuing stories. Peter wants a life with Vanessa, but she does not know him and has been made his prisoner. The book presents the situation through both people, bringing his idea of love into conflict with her need to escape. It became part of the Peter Chronicles, a group of stories exploring the same character. The premise shows how Shaw can turn an apparently familiar wish for companionship into a source of psychological horror.
An ordinary plan can become the starting point for a nightmare.
In The Cabin, writer Craig takes his wife and children away from the city, hoping to work on a novel while they enjoy a short holiday. Their retreat becomes frightening instead of restful. The setup gives the horror an everyday foundation: a family has made plans, arrived somewhere unfamiliar and discovered that the place does not offer the security they expected. Readers interested in a compact suspense story can begin there before moving to its follow-up.
Shaw's more explicit fiction includes Sick Bastards, which places a family in a ruined world after a nuclear attack. Hunger, isolation and survival become part of a story that deliberately crosses social and physical boundaries. Its emphasis differs from a ghost story built primarily around atmosphere. For readers exploring his bibliography, the distinction between these approaches is more helpful than treating every title as the same kind of horror. His books can be linked by fear while using very different methods to create it.
He has also worked with other writers and moved into filmmaking. Monster, written with Michael Bray, became a feature film that Shaw directed in 2018. That project brought his earlier interest in cinema into his professional work. It follows a family whose outward appearance conceals a disturbing private life, retaining the concern with what lies behind ordinary relationships. Writing and directing gave him two ways to present a story in which the household itself becomes a source of danger.
Shaw continues to publish and offers individual help with writing and publishing to people hoping to make a career from their work. His output includes short fiction as well as longer books and connected sequences. Readers can approach it through a particular premise or series, then explore the different tones within his catalog. Psychological tension, threatening environments and characters whose intentions cannot be trusted provide recurring points of connection.
