Series background & context
The Farm is Matt Shaw's two-part horror story about an ordinary evening interrupted by an abduction and the person responsible for it. Sam and Sophie plan a meal out, perhaps followed by a film. When Sam arrives late, Sophie is missing. His immediate uncertainty gives the opening a recognizable starting point: a partner hasn't appeared where she should be, and the explanations that might make the situation ordinary begin to disappear as he tries to locate her.
Sam's day has already been difficult. Meetings overrun, his phone loses power, and traffic delays him further. Those problems help separate the couple at the moment when communication matters most. By the time he reaches the restaurant, Sophie isn't there. She is also not at home or with friends. The routine frustration of lateness becomes something much more frightening when he cannot explain where she has gone. The plan to spend a little time together now measures the distance between what each of them expected and what has happened.
Sophie is being held at the farm, restrained and unable to leave.
That knowledge gives the story two very different kinds of pressure. Sam needs answers, while Sophie needs to survive the place in which she is trapped. The rural location promises concealment rather than refuge. A farm can suggest practical work and isolation from city life, but here distance helps keep a victim beyond ordinary assistance. The title's simplicity contributes to the effect: it names a setting that would not, by itself, tell anyone what kind of activity is taking place there or who is being prevented from going home.
The Farm 2 continues with Shane, whose accumulated victims have made the authorities a threat to his freedom. He decides he needs to move and establish himself elsewhere rather than stop. That continuation widens the focus from a single disappearance to a perpetrator's determination to keep operating. Finding another property becomes a means of preserving access to victims. The ongoing problem is therefore larger than one location: leaving the original farm doesn't necessarily end the practices that made it dangerous, because the person behind them intends to carry those practices with him.
Read The Farm before The Farm 2, or choose the edition collecting both stories. Expect adult horror built around captivity, violence, and the disruption of a couple's everyday life. The opening depends on how little can separate a familiar plan from a crisis when people lose contact. The sequel follows the continuing threat beyond that initial setup, asking how a killer adapts when discovery begins to seem possible and remaining in one place becomes an unacceptable risk to him.
