Series background & context
Masters Among Monsters is a dark, sensual paranormal series that blends vampire lore with Greek myth and queer romance. Over three books it follows ancient immortals and the humans who become tangled in their power games, gradually revealing a world where gods and monsters walk among us.
The story opens in Alasdair, where we meet Alasdair Kyriakous, a feared and respected vampire sired by the Ancient Vasilios. Bestowed with eternal life and formidable strength, Alasdair has spent centuries indulging in pleasure and violence in equal measure, yet he is unusually controlled about who he lets close. That control shatters when he encounters Leo, a mortal whose existence seems to be tied to a mysterious prophecy.
As Leo is drawn into the vampires’ orbit, the wider structure of their world comes into focus: Ancients who rule their lines, internal rivalries, and an uneasy balance with the human race. Questions arise about destiny, free will, and whether an immortal being can truly change.
Isadora shifts the spotlight to the most formidable female vampire in existence, Isadora Nikitas. Turned by the Ancient Diomêdês after a brutal betrayal, she has remade herself as a weapon. When her past crashes into her present in the form of Elias Fontana, a museum director with his own secrets, she must decide whether love is a weakness she cannot afford or the one thing strong enough to alter her course.
In Thanos, the final book, the focus moves to Eton and his first sired, Thanos Agapiou, whose bond has been pushed to breaking point by tragedy. Their arc pulls together the threads of prophecy, vengeance, and sacrifice that have been woven through the previous volumes, forcing all of the series’ central players to choose sides in a conflict that could reshape their world.
The tone throughout is lush and gothic, heavy on atmosphere and slow burn temptation. Blood and desire are tightly linked, and consent, power, and worship are constant themes. While the series stands apart from the contemporary Chicagoverse, readers who enjoy Frank’s intensity and emotionally charged relationships will find a familiar heartbeat under the darker trappings.
