Series background & context

The Exquisite series marks the beginning of Ella Frank’s published career and lays the groundwork for the Chicago based storytelling she returns to again and again. These MF romances revolve around a high end restaurant, the people who work there, and the women who walk into their lives at exactly the wrong and right times.

In Exquisite, Lena O’Donnell is a skilled pediatrician whose life has been defined by a tragic loss. For nearly a decade she has carried intense survivor’s guilt over her younger sister’s death, building high walls around her heart and focusing on work instead of pleasure. Mason Langley, by contrast, is the easygoing owner of one of Chicago’s most popular restaurants. He has a close family, a thriving business, and no interest in complicating his well ordered bachelor life.

A botched flower delivery leads to their first clash, and from there the book follows their slow shift from antagonists to lovers. Lena has to decide whether she is willing to risk feeling again, and Mason must show that his charm is more than a surface act. Food, family dinners, and the bustle of a busy kitchen provide a vivid backdrop to their emotional journey.

Entice moves the spotlight to Shelly Monroe, a doctor and friend of Lena’s, and Joshua, Mason’s best friend. Shelly is tired of always choosing the wrong men, while Joshua’s laid back exterior hides insecurities of his own. Their romance digs into questions of self worth and the fear of repeating old patterns.

Edible continues to build out the web of connections, giving side characters their own chance at centre stage. Throughout the series, Frank blends humor, heartfelt conversations, and explicit intimacy, showing her early knack for making both everyday interactions and big emotional confrontations feel immediate.

Exquisite sits slightly apart from the later MM focused Chicagoverse but shares its DNA: strong ties between friends and siblings, a deep love of the city, and the conviction that even very wounded people can find a way to let someone in.
