Author bio
Mark Stone writes the kind of thrillers that like salt air, fast weather, and bad news arriving by boat. He grew up between South Carolina's lowcountry and the beaches of Naples, Florida, spending summers with his grandfather and building the coastal map that would later show up all over his fiction.
That split geography explains a lot.
Stone's books keep returning to docks, islands, beach towns, and the people who make a life there. The coastal setting is not just decoration in his work. It shapes the mood, the pace, and often the danger itself, whether the story is moving through a marina in Florida, a stretch of shoreline near Charleston, or a quiet neighborhood that only looks safe from the outside.
He published his first novel, Lost in the Storm, in 2017. That book introduced Detective Dillon Storm and launched the Coastal Justice series, which helped define Stone's style early on: fast chapters, clear stakes, local color, and a hero who has to solve crimes while navigating the pull of home, family, and old ties.
Then he kept building.
Instead of staying with one lead forever, Stone opened up a wider coastal world. Lucky Break follows former soldier John Lucky after a freak stroke of luck sends him to Florida and straight into trouble. Carolina Reaper shifts into darker territory with Detective Andy Winslow, who returns to Charleston and has to face the fact that his identical twin is a notorious serial killer. In One Bridge Too Far, retired sheriff Jack Harrington moves to Key Biscayne planning to slow down, only to get pulled into the covert work of the Coastal Crime Unit.
Other books show the same range inside a familiar frame. Extreme Defense leans into legal suspense through attorney Rick Archer. Crashing Waves pairs Detective Katherine Cross with former reality TV treasure hunter Russell Anchorage for a more adventurous, odd-couple feel. True Faith introduces former Coast Guard rescuer Tru North, a man looking for a quiet life in Key West who quickly learns that quiet is not really Stone's thing.
Water is almost always part of the deal.
So are loyalty, second chances, and the trouble that comes with going back home. Stone likes capable people who thought they were moving into calmer lives and were very wrong. His books often center on cops, veterans, rescuers, lawyers, and reluctant problem solvers, the sort of characters who know how to keep going even when the ground under them starts to shift.
He lives in South Carolina with his wife and their terrier. When he is not writing, he has been described as spending time on the water, hiking, and planning more trips back to Florida. That feels fitting. His fiction is full of people who cannot quite stay away from the coast, and he seems to understand exactly why.
