Jessie St. James Books in Order

The Jessie St. James books follow Detective Jessie St. James, a lead who brings a slightly different energy to Mark Stone's coastal thrillers. Where some of his series lean into returning home or chasing big adventure, this one feels more personal and more suspicious from the start. Jessie is trying to move forward, but the coast keeps handing her cases that test not only her instincts but also her ability to trust the people around her.

That question of trust sits at the center of the series. Jessie works closely with Roman Parks, and the books make good use of the uncertainty around that partnership. Is he dependable, compromised, misunderstood, or some shifting combination of all three? The tension between them gives the series an ongoing thread that matters just as much as the individual mysteries.

Fresh starts do not stay fresh for long in these books.

Saints and Sinners, Saints and Secrets, and Saints and Sorrow all build on that idea. The cases bring Jessie into contact with frightened witnesses, hidden relationships, and the kind of local secrets that only get more dangerous once daylight hits them. Stone writes these stories with his usual quick pace, but the emotional stakes land because Jessie is never solving from a distance. She is inside the mess.

The setting keeps the books in familiar Mark Stone territory, beach communities, close ties, and trouble that travels fast when everybody is connected. But the Jessie books have a slightly more intimate feel than some of his broader adventure series. They are not small stories, exactly, but they are close-up ones.

If you like detective fiction with an ongoing partner dynamic, coastal atmosphere, and mysteries built around secrets people would very much prefer to keep buried, this series is an easy one to sink into.
