Author bio

Marina Adair writes contemporary romance with a strong sense of place, plenty of banter, and women who are usually juggling a lot more than love. She was raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, and that California grounding shows up again and again in her books, whether she is writing Napa wine country, mountain towns, or crowded family homes where everybody has an opinion.

Story came early. Adair has said she has been a storyteller her whole life. As a child she was often sick, so she passed the time inventing elaborate stories on the couch and acting them out with Barbies and her brother's Han Solo figure. She also grew up in a multigenerational home, with parents and grandparents under one roof, and she has pointed to old movies and classic television as part of what shaped her imagination.

Her road to publishing was not especially neat.

She attended Santa Clara University but did not finish her undergraduate degree then, after being diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis in her twenties. A few years later, a screenwriting class helped her figure out what she really wanted to do. She went back to school, earned a BA in film in 2010, and later completed an MFA at San José State University. She has talked openly about knowing she wanted to write romance, even when other students were aiming for something more obviously literary.

That choice paid off.

Two of the early novels she workshopped in graduate school became the first books she sold, and she started publishing quickly after that. Readers first met her through books like Tucker's Crossing and Kissing Under the Mistletoe, then kept following her into connected small-town worlds such as St. Helena Vineyard, Heroes of St. Helena, Destiny Bay, and Sugar, Georgia. What brings many readers back is not just the romance, but the whole atmosphere, busy towns, big feelings, second chances, and families who are loving, nosy, and hard to ignore.

She has a knack for building love stories around everyday work and community life. In Summer in Napa, a chef and restaurateur heads home to rebuild. Autumn in the Vineyard turns property trouble and harvest season into romantic tension. ROMeANTICALLY Challenged shifts to coastal Rhode Island and leans harder into rom-com energy, while You've Got Male uses the chaos of parenting, aging parents, and a struggling coffee shop as the backdrop for a fake-dating setup. Even when the books are funny, the emotional stakes are usually rooted in real things, grief, money, illness, family pressure, and the question of whether people can change.

She likes messy lives, not perfect ones.

That may be why her books feel so easy to settle into. Her characters are bakers, artists, vets, firefighters, teachers, musicians, and women trying to hold a lot together at once. Small towns matter in her fiction, but not because they are ideal. They are noisy, forgiving, meddlesome places where history follows people around and where healing can happen in plain sight.

Adair's reach has grown well beyond the page. Her St. Helena Vineyard novels inspired the Vineyard movies, and her romances have sold more than a million copies. She now lives in Northern California with her husband, daughter, and two neurotic cats, which sounds a lot like the start of a Marina Adair side character description.
